Basketball - 1990
Fairfax High School’s fiery basketball coach for 28 years (1955-1983), Marty Biegel led his Lion hoopsters to eleven League titles.
During the early 1970's, Biegel coached in the Los Angeles Olympic Development League, tutoring such future college and professional stars as Bill Laimbeer, Kiki Vanderweghe, and Brad Holland. In the mid-70s, he coached two years at Cal State University-Los Angeles.
Other coaching assignments took him to North Hollywood High School in 1990, Malibu High 1992-96, and the 1997-98 season at L.A.’s orthodox Shalhevet High School.
A teacher (social sciences) as well as coach for 31 years in the Los Angeles school system, Marty was also a highly respected basketball referee from 1946 to 1965, moving through high school and college to the National Basketball Association in 1960. He was the first West Coast referee to officiate an NBA Lakers vs Celtics contest.
A native New Yorker, "Bieg" retired and un-retired with regularity during the 1990s, taking on basketball and baseball coaching assignments at various Los Angeles area high schools.
